One of the most significant aspects of organic agriculture is the importance of the soil fertility, where the soil is considered as “alive” and at the same time an ecosystem.  Soil as breathing entity that eats and is nourished; earth that protects and is protected. Organic agriculture which should be “the Agriculture” and on the contrary got another appellation to be differentiated to the “conventional” one, that actually is the chemical one (quite funny isn’t it?) could be considered nowadays the modern agriculture: agriculture meant as research and preserving past knowledge , as innovation and “re-innovation", as biodiversity and as food culture and history that starts from the terroir and arrives to the table. Now,  if we think about how to explain what agriculture is to a child… Surely he would be captivated by the science and the magic of the ecosystem in the soil, the nourishment of it through the plants, the strategies and the “weapons “ used by the farmer in the biological pest control to defeats insects!  On the contrary how boring to tell and to hear about chemical fertilizers, insecticides, herbicides! And just last night I found on YouTube a very revealing Disney’s short :“Mickey Mouse - Mickey's Garden” (1935) where Mickey mouse accidently sprays himself with bug poison for the garden and he starts to hallucinate dreaming that all plants and bugs have grown and try to catch him…70 years ago!!! to watch! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnKfVLwAIvA Organic Agriculture also for Mickey Mouse? Uno degli aspetti più affascinanti dell' agricoltura biologica è forse la centralità della fertilità del suolo. Il terreno che vive ed è luogo di vita. La terra che respira, che nutre e si nutre, che protegge e che viene protetta. L'agricoltura biologica che per antonomasia dovrebbe essere l' "Agricoltura" e invece si è dovuta dare un nome così complesso nella comunicazione per differenziarsi da quella "convenzionale" nonchè chimica (buffo se ci si pensa) potrebbe essere considerata come la vera agricoltura moderna. Una agricoltura che fa ricerca e custodisce il sapere della storia, che si innova e si rinnova, che guarda alla biodiversità e che crea storia e cultura del cibo a partire dal terroir fino alla tavola. Ora immaginiamo di voler spiegare l'agricoltura a un bambino. Quanta scienza e quanta passione gli si potrebbe trasmettere attraverso il racconto della magia della vita nella terra animata da migliaia di piccoli organismi, delle piante che la nutrono, dell'ingegno usato dal contadino per trovare le "armi" migliori per combattere e sconfiggere i parassiti! Quanta noia invece dover raccontare di fertilizzanti, pesticidi, diserbanti chimici... L’altra sera su YouTube  ho trovato un video : “Mickey Mouse - Mickey's Garden " dove Topolino intossicato dai pesticidi spruzzati nel suo orto fa sogni allucinati con insetti e piante giganti che lo vogliono catturare…il video è del 1935, 70 anni fa….da vedere! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnKfVLwAIvA
