Au “terroir” Monsieur Serge! (English v. below)

Il mondo della viticoltura libanese e internazionale ha salutato con sincera commozione Serge Hochar, proprietario della rinomata azienda vitivinicola Chateau Musar che se ne è andato durante queste ultime festività.
Serge aveva 75 anni ed era una leggenda. Uomo elegante e charmant, entusiasta dallo sguardo brillante e ironico. Nel 1959 aveva iniziato ad occuparsi dell’azienda vitivinicola di famiglia fondata dal padre Gaston Musar negli anni ‘30. E’ stato sin dagli inizi promotore della viticoltura moderna in Libano, ha resistito alla guerra civile (dal 1975 al 1990 solo la vendemmia del ‘96 non è stata raccolta) e ha portato il vino del Libano nei mercati internazionali. Agricoltura biologica, pochissima solforosa, vini non filtrati, più qualità/meno produzione, tanto terroir, sense of humor e passione alla base dell’ unicità dei vini Musar apprezzati oramai in tutto il mondo.
Alcuni anni fa ho avuto la fortuna di conoscere Serge e di essere guidata in
una emozionante degustazione nella cantina a Ghazir (a nord di Beirut). Serge mi chiese quale fosse il mio anno di nascita. Scese in “archivio” e stappò una bottiglia di due annate successive (perché il mio anno di nascita coincideva con l’inizio della guerra civile e non era stata una buona vendemmia). Ci avventurammo così in un percorso unico alla scoperta di sentori, terroir, racconti di vita e storia attraversando gli spazi e i piani della cantina, mentre Serge con la sua connaturata simpatia e giovialità, ci faceva notare come un vino versato in un calice non rimane mai lo stesso, perché muta, si evolve e si trasforma a seconda del luogo fisico e lo spazio temporale in cui lo si beve.

In the beginning of the new year Lebanese and international winery sector said good bye paying its tribute following the death of Serge Hochar, owner of the world renowned Chateau Musar winery.
Serge was 75 and he was a legend. Elegant, charming and enthusiastic man with a brilliant and ironic glance. In
1959 he began to work at the family winery founded in the 30ies by his father Gaston Musar. He was pioneer of the modern Lebanese winemaking, he stood up the civil war (from 1975 to 1990 only the ’76 harvest wasn’t pick up) and put the Lebanese wine on the international market. Organic agriculture, minimum sulphur, not filterd wines, high quality/low production, a lot of terroir, sense of humor and passion at the basis of the unique taste of Chateau Musar’s wines appreciated all over the world.
Some years ago I had the luck of meeting Monsieur Serge and have an amazing winetasting together in the winery in Ghazir (15 miles far away from Beirut). Serge asked me in which year I was born. He went to the cellar in the “archive” and opened a bottle (a 2 years later one as I was born in the year when civil war started and that one has been not a good harvest). Then we began to travel through terroir, history, narrative. While physically moving from room to room, from level to level of the cellar, Serge, with his innate spontaneously and joviality, made us realize and taste how the same wine in the same glass evolves , changes and develops according to the place and the time framework you drink it.
