Will insects be really a sustainable source of food?
16 ottobre 2012
Today is the World Food Day announced each spring by the Food and Agriculture Organization. (versione italiana disponibile a fine articolo)
Last reports about food and nutrition by FAO tell us that one-third of the food produced worldwide for human consumption in the world each year is lost or wasted annually (around 30/40%).
On the other hand FAO say that in 2050 there will be a food emergency because global demand for livestock products seems that it will more than double during the next 50 years.
"Because insects are cold blooded, they have a high food conversion rate, e.g. crickets need six times less feed than cattle, four times less than sheep, and twice less than pigs and broiler chickens to produce the same amount of protein. They also emit less greenhouse gases than conventional livestock ", we need to prepare us to eat bugs and spiders.
Recently European Commission announced research projects funded with 3 million euros to promote eating insects are to be decided on this year.
Now Mr Me's question is: do you reallythink that insects breeding will be a sustainable way to solve the problem?
I am not speaking about the 3 stars restaurants that offer in their menu exclusive creations with bugs and grasshoppers.
I am speaking about the breeding of insects for human daily worldwide consumption. I do not think that they will wild harvested in the forest!! I cannot believe in this naïf scenario. For sure food safety measures will be taken in order to guarantee consumers and …voilà!
What Mr Me really believes is that there are already some big companies that prepared the basis to sell worldwide insects in packages for family. They are probably now studying about their promotional campaign. There will be probably intensive breeding of GMOs modified insects (fatter protein added worms, vitamins added crickets with, crickets with 1 leg so that they cannot fly away or they can be sold fresh… etc).
I mean can you imagine the intensive breeding of millions of cricket or beetles? And if there is some uncalculated flight? Insects seem to be part of the sustainable way of eating, but if it is now for sure won’t be in a next future where they will become a international business.
I had preferred to talk about a sustainable agriculture and livestock in the world were the word biodiversity is not only a slogan. I had preferred to talk about laws to reduce the production of intensive livestock enhancing the local agricultures and economies…but I know also this is a naïf wish...
Well we can prepare ourselves for the next era : the ”Wormburger” double cheese (but the cheese where will it come from???)
